Through copious absurdity, 3 Idiots highlights the social pressures placed upon economic success. Mental health, passion, and fear define main characters, exemplifying their importance in a world that weighs profits over well-being. Unfortunately, while the ending reiterates these themes, that's accomplished by giving monetary value to the hero. A more impactful conclusion might've shown how this dreamer found happiness without money. Meanwhile, the underwritten supporting characters are mostly flat devices. Plus, the dialogue is blunt and the plot is belabored. Still, because 3 Idiots attempts honorable ideas with levity, most should find it both enlightening and enjoyable.
Technically, 3 Idiots is bold. Its ranged acting shows intensity, vulnerability, and slapstick. The sound utilizes stings, echoes, voiceovers, smash cuts, split cuts, distortions, and symbolism. Song interludes overtake the film with flashes of elaborate production design. Its editing adds frame rate shifts, match cuts, fades, flashbacks, montages, inserts, intercuts, passing cuts, wipes, and jump cuts. However, the repetitive pacing muddles momentum. Its visuals use motion, composition, color, focus, filters, angles, and lighting. Finally, the effects provide brief animation, wires, CGI, prosthetics, and water work. Overall, 3 Idiots counters lacking precision with big swings.
