Bad Boys: Ride or Die

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is erratic. Its script is overstuffed and exposition-heavy. The simplistic yet convoluted plot waters down predictable formulas with pointless digressions. This results in an underdeveloped villain and unearned arcs. It's nice that the heroes have new internal dynamics, but they're left superficially considered. Consequently, the actors are cornered, competently going through the motions but never connecting with the audience. Even Smith feels stale despite his chemistry with his co-lead. Only Lawrence is able to inject consistent personality. There are obvious reveals, invincible protagonists, and cliches. Therefore, Ride or Die's story is tiresome.

Ride or Die's energy both lightens its messiness and exacerbates it. The direction can't reconcile its humorous and self-serious tones. The editing is brisk but bloated, a high pace and short runtime offset by clunky momentum. Its production design has flavorful set pieces yet is otherwise sterile. Forgettable scoring weighs down the music's impact. Its effects combine tangible stunts and pyrotechnics with spotty CGI. The cinematography sways from flashy to chaotic. Its sound offers plentiful action and emotional distortions. The original cast members bring reliable fame, but the new blood isn't worth mentioning. Overall, Ride or Die buries fun bits in a muddled whole.
