Bottoms

Writer's picture: Gus KellerGus Keller

Bottoms is fearlessly absurd and refreshingly unique. There's witty dialogue, dark humor, deadpan satire, potent personality, setup/payoff, unpredictability, delightful irreverence, social commentary, and bold creativity. Some might find it emotionally thin, but underneath its sarcasm are timely themes of equality, acceptance, and awareness. The acting earns an oddly relatable heart through rare levels of chemistry, charisma, timing, spontaneity, physicality, commitment, and versatility. Plus, its direction has sharp tones, quirky flavor, meta trope twists, and precise exaggeration. Ultimately, Bottoms is undoubtedly fun but also encourages viewers to embrace their individuality.

Technically, Bottoms transcends into surrealism. The cinematography adds heightened motion, focus, lighting, angles, and framing. Its concise editing uses timing, inserts, pacing, montages, momentum, frame rates, and action. The music is offbeat, eclectic, trans-diegetic, cued, and over the top. Its amplified production design has dreamlike set dressings and hyperbolic wardrobes. Its sound offers split cuts, volume shifts, smash cuts, violence, comedic silence, and cartoonish stings. The cast is diverse, talented, optimized, and up-and-coming. Its effects utilize stunts, blood, makeup, pyrotechnics, and some CGI. Overall, Bottoms' distinct and enthusiastic vision is infectious.
