Inside Out 2

Writer's picture: Gus KellerGus Keller

Inside Out 2 introduces valuable new ideas but becomes muddled in the process. Slightly crowded; it says less with more. However, Inside Out 2 is still excellent in many ways. Most importantly, the story is highly relatable, deriving potent connection from small-scale drama. It considers themes branching from identity, like self-worth, control, honesty, and acceptance. There's concise exposition, varied humor, informed psychology, nuanced conflicts, setup/payoff, and an adventure plot. The voice acting brings chemistry and distinct personalities (though it lacks the ranged vulnerability of the previous film). Overall, Inside Out 2's imprecision is saved by its sincerity.

Technically, Inside Out 2 is consistently engaging. The imagery adds depth, color, shapes, and framing. Its editing builds considerable momentum by cross cutting between mirroring storylines. Balancing internal and external, the sound uses fantasy elements and emotionally driven distortions. Its generally less memorable music offers fit, key silence, and optimal use of the original melody. The production design continues to depict clear metaphors of abstract concepts. Its cast has solid fame but is noticeably missing some returning members. The CGI remains exceptionally detailed, with touches of differing animation styles to boot. Ultimately, Inside Out 2 is imperfectly great.
