Logan

Relating everything back to its hero's emotions, Logan is genuinely intimate. Its existential themes of death, legacy, and family permeate the drama. The protagonists have dynamic motivations, earning arcs through their relationships with each other. This all leads into the plot, which may be the weakest aspect of the script, but remains small-scale and character-driven. The villains are cliche, there are contrivances, and the exposition can be heavy, yet that's all forgivable. Finally, this is all solidified by the layers, physicality, personality, chemistry, intensity, vulnerability, and catharsis of the acting. Consequently, Logan is just too sincere to be diminished.

Technically, Logan unites a range of tones and genres. The imagery uses lighting, framing, motion, depth, and angles to underscore drama. Its editing establishes a somber pace yet firm momentum, with bursts of action. The sound reinforces genres through combat, sci-fi elements, and distortions. Its music is marked by melancholy scoring, Western influences, and a poignant end credits song. The production design infuses grunge into the superhero world-building. Its cast centers around Jackman and Stewart, who are irreplaceable in these career-defining roles. The effects create visceral and thematically-motivated violence. Ultimately, Logan marries entertainment with substance.
