Nickel Boys

Writer's picture: Gus KellerGus Keller

Nickel Boys is essential. Its matter-of-fact plot raises awareness of atrocities of the not-so-distant past, drawing parallels to remaining issues of today. There are abundant themes like prejudice, oppression, trauma, morality, and systemic corruption. Still, the script's anchor is its heartbreaking drama. Developed with layered motivations, relationships, and growth, its characters are fully realized. This is brought to life by the acting's humanizing chemistry, authenticity, internal intensity, and raw vulnerability. Meanwhile, its writing carefully emphasizes sympathy for the victims over justified anger towards the abusers. Consequently, Nickel Boys is a truly moving story.

Technically, Nickel Boys synergizes impressionism with a mournful tone. Its strict POV imagery balances subjectivity with beauty. The freeform editing flows from hypnotic long takes into stylistic flourishes. Offscreens, archive footage, surreal symbolism, and silence heighten perspective via its soundscape. Uniquely melancholy, the music ranges between fitting needle drops to abstract scoring. Despite lacking scale, its production design establishes a detailed era plus a suffocating sense of place. The cast offers representation, prestige, up-and-comers, and immersion through minimal fame. Primarily makeup, its effects are minor but impactful. Overall, Nickel Boys is visionary.
