Pinocchio (2022)

Pinocchio is a cynical and mediocre imitation. The plot points are exactly the same, so its moral lessons and character arcs remain. However, the central father-son relationship spends a vast majority of the film apart. It's difficult for audiences to engage when the dramatic core is so underdeveloped. Viewers will intellectually understand the motivations, but that connection won't be emotionally felt because it's rushed. Meanwhile, because Pinocchio replicates its predecessor, it's impossible to distinguish it as its own thing. It simply offers nothing new and it's actively mimicking the original. Therefore, the film feels completely redundant, generic, cowardly, and awkward.

Technically, Pinocchio presents misplaced skills. The CGI is detailed but its overuse becomes unconvincing and sterile, robbing the film of relatability and warmth. Similarly, making Pinocchio's character look exactly like the merchandized cartoon was clearly a financial choice. Instead of implementing creativity, continuity, or meaning, Pinocchio is a constant reminder of the film's commercial motivations. Furthermore, there's hasty pacing, unpleasant imagery, lackluster acting, predictable music, and uninspired casting. The sound has decent significance (clocks, magic, elements), but it's rarely artistic. Overall, Pinocchio is a stale and impersonal cash grab.
