Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is empty commercialism. Some will claim its moment of tragedy is a sign of legitimacy, but that's minimally earned. Prioritizing a meandering plot over developing drama, it whiplashes between cliches rather than building to emotional impacts. Meanwhile, the protagonist is a farcical blank slate that contorts to whatever the script needs from scene to scene. There's trite humor, exposition dumps, excessive characters, saccharine platitudes, digressions, contrivances, predictable formulas, and no consequences. Plus, the acting is void of vulnerability, feeling painfully staged. Haphazardly mixing marketable tropes, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a sterile product.

Technically, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is unmotivated mania. Intentionally avoiding real tones, its direction aims for fluff instead. The cinematography is half basic and half drab clutter. Its weightless editing cycles through rushed filler before overindulging in a bloated climax. The sound has expected genre elements. Its music adds a random collection of trivial pop songs. Aside from simply inserting recognizable merchandising, the production design is generic. Arbitrary fit undermines the cast's fame. The CGI is inconsistently convincing and frequently overused, painting backgrounds in artificial sheens. Although it showcases a popular property, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is messy.
