Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's franchising baggage distracts from a promising story. The drama has respectable heart, gesturing towards ideas of community and identity. However, because this thread is often sidelined, it's underdeveloped. Emotional beats are far between; themes are barely unpacked. Instead, its script emphasizes a plot that's focused on the next phase as much as the narrative at hand. This produces superfluous characters plus heavy exposition. When the fan service excitement fades, it's a hodgepodge of three separate movies. Still, its acting provides charisma, chemistry, vulnerability, and sincerity. Overall, Brand New Day is adequate but a missed opportunity.

Technically, Brand New Day is standard fare. Its mild direction yields muddled tones. The editing has sporadic momentum throughout an overlong runtime, plus plentiful (perhaps excessive) action. Abundant genre elements as well as occasional subjectivity fill its soundscape. The music and cinematography are generic. Despite iconography and a sense of place, its production design feels aesthetically broad. While maintaining exceptional fit and skill, the cast offers deep fame. Its CGI effects can become glossy, yet there's high volume (most of which is convincing) with tangible touches. Consequently, Brand New Day doesn't break through the average, competent MCU glass ceiling.
