Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad is a parade of infuriating blunders. It isn't a story, just a frenzied summary of events. There's groaner dialogue, endless exposition, dead-ends, no setup/payoff, nonsense logistics, confusing motivations, contrivances, shoehorned plotlines, needless characters, circular conflicts, corny plot devices, generic threats, over-explanations, under-explanations, convoluted repetition, inconsistencies, flat protagonists, incomplete structure, unclear stakes, feigned emotions, and unearned triumph. Its acting tries (with Smith's heart and Robbie's enthusiasm), but is also erratic, mediocre, cringe, and irritating. Ultimately, Suicide Squad is the definition of a hot mess.

Technically, Suicide Squad wildly scrambles in all directions. Its Frankenstein editing butchers continuity, structure, pacing, resolution, and efficiency. The excessive soundtrack is blunt, distracting, and abrupt. Its production design is bland, try-hard, forgettable, and patchy. The imagery is drab, dim, overly filtered, and chaotic. Its effects have good makeup, but its glossy CGI feels fake. The sound adds stings, combat, and distortions, but also noise and awkward ADR. Its famous cast has excellent fits (Davis and Robbie) and horrible miscasts (Leto). Overall, Suicide Squad exemplifies boardroom meddling as an insecure, compromised, crowded, shallow, and sloppy embarrassment.
