Twister feigns a story. Its drama is painfully cliche. There are too many side characters. The protagonists are one-dimensional at best. Its cartoonish villains make no impact, and its heroes are annoying. The only sympathetic person is the jilted fiance (whose sole purpose is conflict fodder for the contrived romance). Its acting heightens this clumsy shallowness with stiff melodrama, forced chemistry, and grating personalities. The virtually nonexistent plot repeats the same illogical loop with minimal progression. There's heavy exposition, cheesy dialogue, tensionless plot armor, and ridiculous science. Consequently, Twister is a feeble excuse for action sequences.
Technically, Twister is mixed. Despite ample set pieces, its direction has no suspense or style. Aside from scenic wide shots, the imagery is overlit, shaky, and cluttered. Its editing provides action, a decent runtime, and sloppy structure. The sound builds mood through intense weather but gets excessive at times. Its music clangs between Western adventure scoring, overdone needle drops, and corny guitar riffs. The production design establishes the American Midwest, tangible destruction, and noticeable product placement. Its cast has mediocre star power yet solid supporting depth. The effects are extensive for their time. Overall, Twister is superficial entertainment.
