Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is adequate, fortifying exhausted superhero formulas with focused motivations and growth. There are heavy exposition dumps, generic villains, weak twists, rushed drama, pointless side characters, contrivances, a muddling framing device, predictability, and shallow themes. Yet, because the protagonist's clear ideals effectively interact with the plot, Wonder Woman stays afloat. Its fish-out-of-water humor is earned, measured, endearing, and needed. The acting is simplistic (absent of layers or intensity), but Gadot suits her innocent character and Pine's charm is reliable. Overall, Wonder Woman's writing is fairly routine but its defined heroine creates investment.

Technically, Wonder Woman is uneven. The direction struggles to blend its range of tones. Its editing provides inserts, cross cuts, and speed ramps, but with clunky pacing. Its imagery adds drab colors and chaotic action. The production design establishes fantasy lands and time periods, yet becomes bland and murky. Its digital effects are excessive and inconsistent. The casting has fame, representation, and Gadot's star-making role. Its sound uses narration, genre elements, muffling, slo-mo, combat, and ringing. The music can be generic and self-serious, but offers fitting and memorable themes. Ultimately, Wonder Woman possesses common pitfalls, yet remains competent and enjoyable.
