1917 is immersive. While placed against an epic backdrop, the story strictly focuses on its protagonists. These characters may feel one-note, but they're granted motivations that produce satisfying growth. Structured around a ticking clock, the plot is broken into an odyssey of smaller conflicts. There are mirroring themes of death plus rebirth. Tragedy, setup/payoff, efficient dialogue, and symbols enrich its script. Meanwhile, the physical acting flows from layered intensity to vulnerable release. Some might find its writing simplistic, valuing style over substance, but at least 1917 has the necessities to foster emotional connections while serving its ambitious experience.
Technically, 1917 is continuous and visceral. The cinematography delivers constantly composed shots combined into long takes. Its editing's invisibility contributes greatly to the ongoing engagement. Primarily diegetic, complex action contrasted by key quiet builds an atmospheric soundscape. Though conventional, its music reinforces grand moods via rhythmic ticking as well as swelling orchestrals. The incredible production design creates environments that become central characters with intense scale (plus destruction/regrowth motifs). Its cast has peripheral fame and excellent fit. The effects combine practicals with digitals for big set pieces. Thus, 1917 is an impressive feat.
