Flow

Writer's picture: Gus KellerGus Keller

Flow is more with less. Despite having no dialogue, the characters and plot are conveyed clearly through actions. Its protagonist has a motivated arc which reflects bigger themes. It contemplates ideas of togetherness, trust, and spirituality in understated ways. Because of this gentle approach, the script becomes deeply interpretable and touching. There's no acting to speak of, but that absence serves the film's objectives. Viewers are allowed to feel the drama more viscerally, provided space to project our innermost emotions onto the screen. There's setup/payoff, earned humor, and mythological influences. Consequently, Flow's profound relatability is wholly endearing.

Technically, Flow constructs a dreamlike atmosphere and a tender tone. The ambient sound establishes a personal perspective. Through its continuous structure and minimal cuts, the editing flows effortlessly. Long takes, handheld motion, and composition create intimate imagery. Its ethereal music supports a range of emotions without overshadowing the delicate experience. The production design combines photorealism, painterly aesthetics, natural settings, and fantasy. Like the acting, its absent cast suits the film's subtly. The animation uses vectorized characters and detailed movements for unique immersion. Ultimately, Flow is a unified and heartwarming vision to behold.
