Here

More a storytelling exercise than a realized story, Here is ambitious yet simple. There are grand themes of time, nostalgia, place, mortality, and dreams. However, because the framing device is so strict, its script regularly feels contrived or shallow. The writing often forces big emotions with big gestures, rather than building to them. This is apparent in the character development, which is limited to broad strokes. Still, while its acting is cramped by melodrama, everyone manages pronounced vulnerability and growth. There's exposition-heavy dialogue, setup/payoff, simplistic social commentary, and clear arcs. Thus, Here leans on cliches while reaching for meaning.

Technically, Here offers a sappy tone but a committed gimmick. Although its limitations are felt at times, the cinematography makes a statement. Using panels and collage-like stitching to jump between timelines, its editing is almost one extended montage. The sound provides key split cuts and minor action. Despite always fitting, its music can be obvious and saccharine. With its evolving setting nearly playing protagonist, the production design is informative (though confined). The cast's reunited stars feel meta when considering the film's messages. Its digital effects inconsistently range from convincing to uncanny. Ultimately, Here is a flawed yet bold experiment.
