Am I OK? starts with an underrepresented premise, focusing on self-discovery and self-acceptance. This is treated with heartfelt sincerity and intimate relatability, sticking to smaller moments and avoiding sensational tropes. However, the script is missing proper motivation. Scenes feel arbitrary and the drama is aimless. The major conflict comes out of nowhere and its conclusion seems unrealistic. There's artificial dialogue, pointless comedy, contrivances, and predictability. Plus, while the acting offers chemistry, vulnerability, and dry humor, there's a wooden quality to Johnson's personality. Overall, Am I OK? has its heart in the right place but lacks energy.
Technically, Am I OK? provides light tones and no notable creative choices. The cinematography uses moody lighting and indifferent framing. Its editing adds mild montages, a short runtime, and underwhelming momentum. The sound isn't harnessed, only supplying basic fundamentals. Its music is upbeat and hipster, with an 80s needle drop (none of which is irreplaceable). Similarly, the production design creates trendy LA vibes for little purpose. Its cast is centered around Johnson, who brings adequate fame but questionable comedic fit. There are no effects, which is suitable (though it feels like another ignored medium). Consequently, Am I OK? is a neutral experience.
