American Psycho

Writer's picture: Gus KellerGus Keller

American Psycho is a triumph. The writing cohesively examines status, consumerism, and identity. Its ambiguous ending emphasizes the detachment and superficiality of excess. The dialogue is surreal and layered. Plus, Patrick Bateman is an iconic character for all this subtext. Certainly, Bale's brilliant performance transforms the film. This might be the highlight of his illustrious career, showing masterful layers as a murderer hiding in plain sight. Bale provides an undertone of rage that is both disturbing and believably accepted. Furthermore, the direction skillfully balances absurdism and sobering realism, making American Psycho a flurry of thoughtful themes and morbid entertainment.

Technically, American Psycho is delicately crafted to support its messages. The cinematography uses framing, focus, composition, and angles to convey meaning, emotions, and representations. The editing uses montages to establish Bateman's structured persona and pacing to mirror his underlying torment. Plus, the runtime is concise. Next, the sound is grounded yet gets symbolically exaggerated. The soundtrack recontextualizes 80s hits, the practical effects are consciously restrained, and the high-class production design embodies the materialism themes. Overall, American Psycho unites powerful source material, an expert filmmaker, and a legendary actor. Thus, it's truly a perfect storm.
