Babygirl

Babygirl is a nuanced character study. While its protagonist may make dislikable choices, she's fascinating and arguably sympathetic. This is because her flaws connect to systemic issues. In turn, there are themes about sexuality, power, boundaries, honesty, and self-discovery. All these ideas are driven by shifting drama, layered with mind games plus complex motivations. Implicit dialogue, interpersonal dynamics, representation, and unexpected tenderness flesh out the script. Meanwhile, the knockout acting brings a whirlwind of intense internal conflicts, raw vulnerability, range, chemistry, and growth. Thus, Babygirl displays an extremely personal side of social commentary.

Technically, Babygirl brews tension. Its direction creates an erotic thriller exterior with a heartfelt core. The cinematography uses shallow focus, handheld motion, POVs, and framing for intimacy. Psychological montages and intercuts break up its editing's stream-like structure. Besides some conscious split cuts, the sound maintains a grounded perspective. Fitting pop songs, operatics, and breathy motifs build an eclectic soundtrack. Reinforcing messages, the production design conveys corporate America. Its cast offers top-notch fame and Kidman's fit is meta. The effects amount to a few stunts. Consequently, Babygirl evokes food for thought through visceral emotions.
