Back in Action is a collection of obvious cliches. There's excessive exposition, a boring McGuffin, lame espionage, contrivances, and a pointless twist. Meanwhile, the humor is predominantly inane banter. However, its absence of drama is the script's biggest shortcoming. Despite centering around a family, every character is an invulnerable trope with superficial relationships. Consequently, the story has no heart. When it does try to pull emotional strings, it's completely unearned, which rings insultingly insincere. The same goes for the phony and undeveloped arc. Plus, the resolution is interrupted by sequel bait. Altogether, Back in Action lacks any trace of humanity.
Technically, Back in Action delivers no legitimate value. Making no impression, its direction stumbles into a bland style plus a farcical tone. The cinematography offers flat framing as well as glossy lighting. Rushed pacing, noticeable filler, and unmotivated structure define the editing. The sound provides standard action. Its music combines generic scoring with distracting (though sometimes juxtaposing) pop hits. Void of personality, the production design is thoroughly sterile. Buoying arbitrary fit with underutilized fame, its casting is the only aspect of note. The effects provide sporadic stunts and cheap CGI. Ultimately, Back in Action is a throwaway product.
