Captain America: The First Avenger is mixed. Its restrained first half sets up the protagonist's relatable motivations, yet its story is otherwise disappointing. With underdeveloped romance and tragedy, the hero's Mary Sue nature flattens his arc. This is especially noticeable when his transformation comes so easily. Its second half is a collection of tropes. There are cliches, contrivances, impersonal stakes, excessive characters, predictability, corny dialogue, and trivialized politics. While the acting establishes personalities, it has vanilla chemistry as well as a lack of vulnerability. Consequently, Captain America's potential is weighed down by superficial formulas.
Technically, Captain America feels muddled. Mild tones plus mediocre set pieces define its direction. The cinematography is mostly basic or often drab. Despite plentiful action and an engaging montage, its editing struggles to maintain momentum through an uneven structure. A variety of genre elements embody the soundscape. Retro and optimistic, its music suits the protagonist while setting moods. Struggling to balance aesthetics, the production design frequently looks overly clean and generic. Evans' superb fit secures its cast. Combining convincing (though uncanny) face compositing with suffocating CGI, the effects are inconsistent. Overall, Captain America is middling.
