Despicable Me 4

Despicable Me 4 is insulting. There's no story, just a collection of convoluted digressions. The thin plot splinters into several dead ends. Any suggestion of drama is played as a joke, removing emotions or personal stakes. Its only (unintentional) theme is the hollowness of commercialism. Dialogue is blunt exposition or strained attempts at humor. On that note, the comedy is recycled, overindulgent, and even a little mean-spirited at times. There are excessive characters, shoehorned gimmicks, cliche formulas, contrivances, and pointless filler. The voice-acting flashes charisma but is mostly going through the motions. Overall, Despicable Me 4 is an apathetic cash grab.

Technically, Despicable Me 4 tries to mask its shallowness with mania. The overactive cinematography is built for short attention spans. Without momentum or structure, its editing meanders into a heap of non-sequiturs. The sound provides action and wacky exaggeration. Rapidly cycling through arbitrary pop hits to feign excitement, its music is overdone and common. The production design blends espionage spoofs and recognizable cartoonishness, yet feels more generic and preoccupied with merchandising. Besides Carrell, the cast is inessential. The CGI offers decent detail, but looks rather average and forgettable. Consequently, Despicable Me 4 is empty nothingness.
