Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is paper thin. Its plot combines a generic romcom outline with a generic superhero outline. There are no sincere emotions, just sporadic gestures at forced drama (which go nowhere). Consequently, its vaguely-drawn characters are one-dimensional. This manifests in the acting, which is decidedly broad while frequently dejected. It has boring exposition, corny humor (some of which takes up entire sequences), absent motivations, central contrivances, and constant cliches. Moreover, the ending is anticlimactic. A superficial collection of halfhearted formulas, Rise of the Silver Surfer is void of creative passion or substantive thought.

Likewise, Rise of the Silver Surfer is technically careless. A cheap product, its direction establishes glossy tones with sterile aesthetics. The cinematography is overlit plus flat. Nonsense filler, arbitrary cuts, choppy flow, and inert momentum define its editing. Through the soundscape, adequate genre elements are provided. Its common music strives for a cheesy upbeat mood. Overly artificial, the production design adds product placements as well as a disappointing final villain. Besides Alba and Evans, its cast is underwhelming. The effects contribute capable prosthetics, uncanny CGI, and distracting green screens. Overall, Rise of the Silver Surfer is a feeble effort.
