Get Out

Get Out uniquely mixes sci-fi, horror, and social commentary. Its script packs important metaphors into a gripping story, nimbly examining systemic racism. Colonization, microaggressions, fetishization, marginalization, and double consciousness are tackled with full force. Thus, instead of simplifying racism, its subtle effects are carefully dissected. This is all enhanced by assured direction and brilliant acting. The tone masterfully synergizes natural drama, unnerving horror, and relieving levity. Meanwhile, the acting is vulnerable, layered, conflicted, intense, ranged, creepy, and duplicitous. Overall, Get Out successfully combines unlikely emotions to drive insightful messages.

Technically, Get Out is restrained yet creative. First, the sound is used for motifs, plot points, symbolism, tension, emphasis, and atmosphere. Distortions, rhythm, split cuts, smash cuts, cues, stings, and silence are employed here. Next, the music shifts between juxtaposition, ominous mood setting, and relevant pop hits, reinforcing the blended genres and cultural themes. This is punctuated by a unifying bookended chant. Lastly, there are informative visuals, well-paced edits, classical production designs, and supportive effects. Plus, this film established Kaluuya as a recognized lead. Delivering clever filmmaking, a thrilling narrative, and powerful meaning, Get Out has it all.
