Ghostbusters (1984)

Ghostbusters is a perfect storm. The writing is gold and the cast is legendary. Meanwhile, the film transcends genres with magical elements backed up by excellent production design. From the proton packs to the Marshmallow Man, so many supernatural components of Ghostbusters are iconic despite not being the focus of the movie. In reality, Ghostbusters is a straightforward comedy about average joes starting a business. The extravagant sets, visuals, and plot points merely accentuate that comedy. Because prime craft went into both the core humor and the surrounding atmosphere, Ghostbusters can't be replicated. Even if studios poured blockbuster budgets into simple comedies, it's unlikely to gel like Ghostbusters.

Interesting fantasy is rare, witty comedy is rarer. Successfully fusing those two is nearly impossible (just look at the sequels). It works here because every role is played perfectly. The focus is rightfully on the sharp humor, complete with defined characters, playful edits, and supreme acting. The tone is serious enough to maintain integrity. The sound design heightens jokes and scares. The special effects are elaborate without overindulgence. And the classic theme song solidifies the mood. Ultimately, Ghostbusters nails every mark, making it universally loved and one of the greatest comedies ever.
