Happy Gilmore 2's plot meanders through a predictable formula with superficial gestures at themes. Its crude humor turns substantive moments into poor taste. For example, its handling of alcoholism swings from honoring sobriety to making light of addiction. This whiplash highlights how mean-spirited the comedy can be while also rendering the shoehorned drama insultingly insincere. In turn, it creates no genuine emotions or arcs. There are exposition dumps, nonsensical setup/payoff, and excessive pop culture references. The acting offers Sandler playing himself, with farcical tones, annoying shouting, and stiff cameos to boot. Thus, Happy Gilmore 2 barely has a story.

Technically, Happy Gilmore 2 is careless. Its direction maintains no cohesive mood or style. The cinematography is frequently flat. Aimless momentum plus unnecessary montages define its weightless editing. Though noisy, the sound provides some cartoonish exaggeration (carried over from its predecessor). Its music is an overcut mishmash of arbitrary needle drops. Combined with blatant nepotism, the casting adds pointless parades of cameos. Its effects are cheap. Aside from sporadic signs of economic disparity, the production design is generic as well as overly commercialized (looking like a fad game show). Consequently, Happy Gilmore 2 is instantly forgettable content.
