Heart Eyes is two generic stories in one. It adds nothing to its genres nor bridges any gaps between them. Instead, it whiplashes through tropes, bringing twice the cliches and struggling to unify. Plus, its broad comedy only worsens the tonal issues. There are exposition dumps, annoying characters, filler, contrivances, predictability, underwhelming reveals, and a saccharine ending. The emotions are shallow, making the protagonists invulnerable. It eventually develops some token drama, yet the farcical script undermines sincerity. While Heart Eyes has formulaic arcing and its lead actors generate convincing chemistry, those light positives are drowned in muddled mediocrity.
Technically, Heart Eyes is sloppy. Its direction struggles to establish tones or style. Despite brief cinematic lighting, the imagery is overly dark, dully colored, and flatly composed. Its editing sputters momentum before the third act becomes clunkily structured. The sound combines standard violence with subjective distortions. Its music uses either juxtaposition for humor or inconsequential scoring. Generally incidental, the production design conveys little personality and looks rather drab. Its cast has diversity but minor fame. Though there's ample gore, the effects undercut impact by depending on digitals over practicals. Overall, Heart Eyes just feels a bit subpar.
