Hotel Transylvania: Transformania is for semi-distracted children. It has virtues, but not in its writing. The story centers around a silly lie and a cliche relationship, feeling like a generic episode of a formulaic TV show. Characters are mild, dialogue is vapid, and messages are obvious. Nothing is serious, so Transformania has no stakes. Plus, the humor rarely works. The gags might satisfy young children, but even older kids will feel indifferent. Meanwhile, the acting is unenthused (outside of maybe Samberg). Thus, Transformania doesn't have dramatic spark. It goes through the motions, but lacks the sincerity and wit to make any impact.
Conversely, Transformania has some decent technicals. The cast is recognizable, but its lead is an unknown Sandler replacement. Also, the soundtrack reinforces the safe mood without elevating the material. The art style is reminiscent of old Cartoon Network shows, yet has little personality beyond that. The editing employs match cuts, but its pacing is rushed. Still, the animation is adequate, the sound is dynamic, and the visuals are energetic and purposeful. Specifically, Transformania comes alive during action. Overall, Transformania is an uninspired sequel to a mediocre franchise. Adults and kids alike will find it tolerable but will quickly forget it.
