I Know What You Did Last Summer is muddled. For such a simple concept, its plot is convoluted. There's a gaping lack of emotional development, resulting in no arcs or relatability. Despite the extreme circumstances plus moral conflicts, the script feels distant and lifeless because intimacy is so superficial. This is exacerbated by forced dialogue, obvious exposition, hurried plotting, awkward humor, excessive characters, contrivances, cliches, weak motivations, and digressions. Though there's serviceable intensity, the acting is predominantly one-note as well as annoying at times. Consequently, I Know What You Did Last Summer doesn't function beyond its recycled premise.

I Know What You Did Last Summer fumbles its tone. Its direction doesn't construct legitimate horror. Occasionally, the cinematography offers moody lighting plus framing. Feeling disjointed, its editing rushes pacing while becoming tedious whenever the action stops. Although it overdoes the stings, the sound consistently utilizes subjective distortions. The music undermines fittingly edgy pop songs with oddly arranged scoring. Its production design establishes a seaside location but conveys alienating wealth in its protagonists. Both the cast's youth and veterans are mediocre. There are fewer gore effects than there should be. Overall, I Know What You Did Last Summer is limp.
