Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

The Crystal Skull is confused, overstuffed with loose threads that unravel into a tangled mess. There are rushed intros, unearned twists, overexplained detective work, obvious dialogue, convoluted exposition, awkward comedy, pointless characters, clunky motivations, repetitive plotting, vague stakes, inconsistencies, forced relationships, faint villains, simple-minded action, messy logistics, disconnected payoff, and limp conflicts. It overemphasizes its dull/indecisive plot, distancing itself from human emotions. Plus, the acting is often mild and even cringey because the material is so muddled. Ultimately, The Crystal Skull has no cohesion, restraint, order, wit, tension, or investment.

Technically, The Crystal Skull is sterile and disjointed. Its direction lacks a tone or genre. The excessive CGI makes everything look fake. Its glossy production design undermines the sense of adventure. The editing has craft but its uneven pacing loses significant momentum. Its recognizable music fails to unite with the erratic content. The imagery adds lighting, oners, composition, and angles, but it's also blandly colored, overlit, and too clean. The casting of an aging Ford spoils the appeal of his character. With its bloated plot, weak relatability, volatile realism, and artificial presentation, The Crystal Skull fundamentally misunderstands what sets this franchise apart.
