It Follows

It Follows is elevated horror. Its curse premise and calculated pacing set atmospheric dread while thematic undertones contemplate loss of innocence and mortality. Meanwhile, there are motivated protagonists, defined relationships, natural developments, and intriguing rules. The plot gets slightly repetitive and character choices are occasionally illogical, but the script does plenty to establish connections on both a surface and deeper level. Plus, the acting is natural, fearful, ranged, and synergistic, giving the surrealism a relatable heart. Overall, it requires attention to be fully appreciated, but It Follows should keep audiences emotionally invested.

Technically, It Follows is detailed and deliberate. Its production design combines several eras, creating a dreamlike unrealness. This timelessness is furthered by the unique synth music, which is bizarre, ambient, and sometimes epic. The methodical editing employs momentum, dissolves, cooldowns, frame rates, jump cuts, intercuts, montages, and scene blending. The sound design uses risers, environment, echoes, muffling, and intense silence to generate suspense. Collectively, these aspects thoroughly and authentically build an unsettling mood. Also, the effects are supportive, the visuals are hypnotic, and the direction is subtly haunting. Ultimately, It Follows finds power in its restraint.
