Joker

Joker is a polarizing descent into madness. Its plot uses redundant tropes but the drama is impactful. Despite muddled motivations, its protagonist has vivid internal demons that earn a downfall arc. Dialogue swings between stodgy exposition and catchy one-liners. There's a civil unrest backdrop, invoking vague ideas of classism and anarchy. It's unclear what stance these themes are taking, and even when statements are made, they're heavy-handed or contradictory. This self-seriousness feels pretentious, but still, the ambition is admirable. Plus, its wholly embodied acting legitimizes deep pain through extreme intensity and physicality. Thus, Joker's broad strokes cover its flaws.

While one-note, Joker marries crisp tones and aesthetics. Via framing, lighting, shallow focus, and sickly colors, the cinematography conveys somber emotions. Although its momentum sags in the middle, its editing brews tension and pops with stylistic flourishes. The sound combines symbolic distortions with ambiance. Needle drops and ominous scoring unify an eclectic range of musical genres. Class divide, urban decay, the era, and iconography are established through the immersive production design. Its cast is centered around Phoenix, who perfectly fits his extensive role. The effects add stunts and some CGI violence. Despite its messy messages, Joker crafts an undeniable mood.
