Stripped down to a simple plot, Last Breath is slight. The perfunctory drama sets up superficial characters who are secondary to the external conflict. Themes like death, risk, and responsibility are also sidestepped. Consequently, there are no internal struggles, personal consequences, or arcs. This renders an inherently harrowing tale surprisingly cold. It's difficult for viewers to invest without dynamic protagonists or meaningful messages. This is further exhibited in the blunt dialogue and predictable cliches. Even its acting provides underwhelming intensity. Ultimately, Last Breath may employ a high (though formulaic) concept, but otherwise feels like a rough draft.
Technically, Last Breath only aims for derivative goals, making its direction feel rather faint and bland. Although there's movement as well as framing, the cinematography's underwater sequences are mostly drab. Despite a concise runtime, its editing sputters out of momentum because it lacks emotional development. Machinery, weather, split cuts, and silence create a solid soundscape. Its music conveys some tense tones but is largely generic. The production design establishes the seafaring atmosphere but feels a bit thin. Its cast has mediocre fame plus arbitrary fit. The effects combine fine CGI with underwater stunts. Overall, Last Breath is quintessentially forgettable.
