Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

Writer's picture: Gus KellerGus Keller

The War of the Rohirrim is competent. Streamlining lore, the narrative maintains a modest scale. Its conflict prioritizes personal relationships and internal motivations as much as external battles. There's proper setup, themes about power, tragedy, and a capable female protagonist. The voice acting offers personalized range. However, beyond these foundational pieces, the script falters. Its characters are fairly flat tropes, with the hero lacking flaws and, in turn, having no growth to achieve. The plot becomes rather predictable towards the end. There's forced fan service and contrivances. Ultimately, The War of the Rohirrim's workable story is slightly underwhelming.

Technically, The War of the Rohirrim has epicness yet struggles to feel wholly epic. Vibrant landscapes, scenic lighting, and active movement define the cinematography. Despite proficient pacing in a decent runtime, its editing stumbles on momentum. The sound is alive with narration, genre elements, distortions, and atmosphere. Its orchestral music combines classic callbacks alongside less memorable new melodies. The production design establishes fantasy world-building through iconography and anime influences. Its cast has little fame but flavorful fit. Although blending 2D with 3D well, the animation lacks fluidity. Consequently, The War of the Rohirrim is good, not great.
