Meg 2: The Trench

Meg 2 is numbing. Expectedly, it's formulaic, nonsensical, superficial, obvious, unnatural, excessive, and silly. Unexpectedly, it's convoluted with redundant characters, dulled with stagnant threads, and exhausted by a bloated climax. Ridiculous movies can be charming, but there's nothing clever or efficient here. The acting is forced, flat, and corny. Its halfhearted attempts at emotion are insulting. The dialogue is painfully cliche, exposition dumps are especially clunky, and farcical logistics turn everything into lame jokes. It would've been somewhat forgivable if the film was easy, but its overstuffed plot is a real chore. Overall, Meg 2 is thoughtless and useless.

Technically, Meg 2 does itself no favors. The weak direction offers sanitized violence, conflicting tones, and unclear action. Its cinematography switches between basic, confusing, and ugly. The editing has rushed pacing, uneven structure, chaotic action, and tired momentum. Its sound gets both intentionally and unintentionally goofy. The soundtrack is forgettable temp music. Its production design is mostly generic yet the underwater setting is particularly bland. The cast is slim on fame or legitimacy. Its effects are full of distracting and cartoonish CGI. Ultimately, Meg 2 hopes its gimmick of being willful schlock will absolve it of a general lack of skill or intention.
