Often sidelining intriguing drama for dense plot, Superman is slightly overambitious. Dialogue is blunted by heavy exposition. Arcs are stifled. There are excessive side characters with flat motivations. Still, the script weaves in humanizing themes, personal conflicts, casual worldbuilding, and political commentary. These pieces can be clunky (especially with the range of humor), but its sincere personality makes those shortcomings forgivable. The acting injects chemistry, intensity, and vulnerability despite the one-note supporting roles. Also, this narrative skips its tired origins story while establishing the hero's morality. Thus, Superman works best when it slows down.
Technically, Superman shows potential yet clashes with itself. Although muddled, its direction leans into a campy adventure tone. The cinematography can get murky but is elevated by lighting, shallow focus, and intimately framed oners. Despite engaged momentum, its editing feels a bit chaotically paced. The sound provides smash cuts plus plenty of genre elements. Its music harnesses the classic John Williams theme and well-timed needle drops. Refreshingly quirky, the production design offers colorful retrofuturism. Its cast has strong fit with breakout fame. Though it becomes a CGI fiesta, the abundant effects add practical touches. Overall, Superman is a promising start.
