Mickey 17

Writer's picture: Gus KellerGus Keller

Mickey 17 is offbeat. It has social, psychological, and philosophical themes, ranging from class exploitation to self-worth to identity. Intentionally exaggerated, its premise allows for absurd satire. Still, there are gut punches of drama. The protagonist's emotions are built around his backstory as well as his relationships. Though overstuffed, its script is unpredictable plus anchored by the hero's arc. This is enhanced by the acting, which presents a range of wacky personalities, dark humor, intensity, physicality, and growth. There's also setup/payoff, efficient (albeit blunt) exposition, and an optimistic ending. Consequently, Mickey 17 is many bold swings in one.

Mickey 17 crafts a unique tone. Its imagery keeps bleak settings fresh with calculated framing and movement. The editing's lengthy runtime may lose momentum but its timeline jumping boosts engagement. Genre elements, voiceovers, and effective uses of quiet fill the soundscape. Primarily classical, its music spans from restrained piano to full operatics. The production design creates sci-fi world-building with symbolic colors plus inequality undertones. Its cast combines fame, skill, fit, and diversity. Leaning more on digitals with touches of practicals, the effects are rather extensive. Overall, Mickey 17 delivers meaningful entertainment through a distinct personality.
