Moana

Writer's picture: Gus KellerGus Keller

Moana properly executes familiar tropes. It offers an underrepresented community, an absence of needless romance, a proactive protagonist, and meaningful resolution. Some might find the ending underdeveloped or cliche, but it evokes emotions by uniting the drama, themes, and plot. Meanwhile, its thesis about self-acceptance may be simplistic, but it's still nice to receive a consistent and valuable message. Also, the voice acting (while somewhat confined) provides personality, capable singing, comedic chops, and mild range. There's blunt (but compact) exposition, a likable relationship, setup/payoff, and decent humor. Consequently, Moana feels more classic than derivative.

Technically, Moana delivers confident musical numbers alongside adventure. Color, framing, lighting, motion, and picturesque backgrounds make appealing imagery. Its editing creates energetic momentum through set pieces in a concise structure. Reinforcing the tones, playful genre elements enliven the soundscape. Its music is famous for its emotional precision, catchy hooks, and cultural influences. Establishing an engaged location, the production design includes informed details. Its cast's representation supplements its top-heavy fame. The CGI combines traditional styles with advanced textures. Overall, there are many reasons why Moana has become a modern Disney standout.
