Mr. & Mrs. Smith squanders a fun premise with a lacking script. Most noticeably, the setup rushes development for set pieces. Unfortunately, this creates cold characters, flat arcs, a simplified plot, undermined comedy, dull twists, and cheapened action through minimal investment. Had Mr. & Mrs. Smith properly explored the decaying marriage, their marital conflicts could’ve paid off in their physical battles. Instead, the film is surprisingly lifeless. Plus, this missing heart bleeds into the performances, showing Pitt and Jolie at their least charismatic. Overall, the film just doesn't emotionally connect. Thus, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a missed opportunity.
Technically, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is forgettable. Despite comical smash cuts, its editing butchers the pacing and drama. Its cinematography employs minor angles, movements, and focus, yet is generally generic. These mediums provide coherent action, but that's it. Meanwhile, sound is dynamic, music is relevant, and production is sleek, yet they serve shallow emotions. Furthermore, the stunts, practical explosions, green-screens, and complimentary CGI strengthen the experience, but the action is still mostly mediocre. Consequently, the film simply doesn't have a spark. Its tones don't land and its vision is cluttered, creating a stream of disappointment.
