My Old Ass

Although its gimmick is sparingly used, My Old Ass is a coming-of-age story with a fantasy twist. Themes like valuing life experiences (even if they sometimes hurt) create an optimistic attitude, despite touching on melancholy truths. The script is dialogue-driven, switching between endearing banter and poetic monologues. Its plot is thin and the final reveal could be considered melodramatic, but that's forgivable because everything is charming and serves valuable substance. Plus, the acting solidifies the material's sincerity, guiding the narrative with spontaneous chemistry, internal conflicts, humor, and vulnerability. Consequently, My Old Ass makes an emotional impact.

Technically, My Old Ass manages a nostalgic tone. Purposeful lighting, framing, and depth are peppered in the cinematography. Its editing balances naturalistic pacing with warm montages. Although grounded, the sound adds a few heightened choices. Its music can feel slightly generic, yet there's cozy scoring and playful needle drops. The production design establishes a small-town sense of place on the Great Lakes of Canada. Its cast may be limited in fame (since Plaza has less screen time than the marketing suggests), but there's up-and-comer potential here. Suitable for the film's atmosphere, there are basically no effects. Ultimately, My Old Ass is intimate and genuine.
