Ne Zha 2

Writer's picture: Gus KellerGus Keller

Ne Zha 2 is indulgent. Its story is overstuffed with characters, plot points, and comedic digressions. Sparse yet extreme, its emotional development can come across as melodramatic. The fantasy folklore source material yields unique culture, but much of that mythology is bluntly delivered through exposition. There are twists, messages about power, and cliches. The conflict has weak resolution because of sequel bait. Its protagonist's internal arc is underwhelmingly earned. Meanwhile, the acting's intensity sometimes feels overdone. Therefore, while Ne Zha 2 contains redeeming qualities (like themes, emotions, and mythos), the writing is too chaotic to maximize its impact.

Technically, Ne Zha 2 offers potent energy. Though occasionally exhausting, its direction delivers exciting set pieces. Utilizing movement, framing, and lighting, the cinematography is proactive. Providing plentiful action yet muddled structure, its editing is immoderate. Various genre elements as well as subjectivity enliven the complex soundscape. Its music uses mystical influences plus an original end credits song. The production design creates epic fantasy world-building. Despite small resumes, its cast adds fitting representation. The CGI animation feels standard at times, but has texture and extensive moving parts. Ultimately, Ne Zha 2 is a pungent burst of flavor.
