Nimona is entertaining and meaningful, a subtle enough allegory for bigotry and a fun sci-fi fantasy adventure. There are consistent developments, layered characters, world-building, dynamic relationships, setup/payoff, comedy, and earned growth. It has themes of institutionalism, prejudice, empathy, classism, fear-mongering, belonging, the liberty of open-mindedness, and body positivity. Its villain is forgettable and exposition can be blunt, but that's forgivable. The voice acting adds charisma, chemistry, internal conflict, energy, range, and commitment, bringing these personalities to life. Thus, Nimona is a concise journey of proactive action, impactful drama, and relevant messages.
Technically, Nimona is spirited. The music is trans-diegetic, lively, atmospheric, and slightly original. Its cast has name recognition and diversity. The sound uses narration, genre elements, stings, and layering. Its imagery offers lighting, focus, composition, motion, depth, color, and framing. The editing supplies montages, match cuts, inserts, smash cuts, pacing, cross cuts, and a concise runtime. Its animation looks geometric, vectorized, and expressive for a fittingly unique style. The production design creates an imaginative, genre-bending fusion of futurism and the Middle Ages. Overall, Nimona is a bit familiar, but its subversions, purpose, and creativity make it progress.
