Out of sync, Paint has competent ingredients that never work. Jokes flop, characters feel strange, drama is clunky, and themes are confused. There are ideas of ego, integrity, hindsight, outdatedness, and misogyny, but no clear statements are made. Its constructed humor often misfires because of awkward timing. The muddled mood rarely signals how seriously moments should be taken. Despite being a simple story, viewers will seldom know how to feel. Wilson does an impression and the supporters sporadically show comedic skill, but Paint is too aimless to overcome. It follows screenwriting rules, but it's built from its shallow gimmick rather than a recognizable foundation.
Technically, Paint is similarly vague. Its direction delivers unclear tones, time-periods, and messages. The neutral cinematography has some brief framing and focus. Its editing uses dissolves, inserts, and smash jump cuts, but the momentum is nonexistent. The sound offers unimpactful split cuts and voiceovers. Its effects only add some out-of-place CGI. The thin cast isn't optimized. Its needle-drop soundtrack is fitting yet gets lost in the jumbled drama. The production design captures Vermont, PBS, and Bob Ross, but it's all purposeless. Ultimately, Paint would have decent craft if it knew where it was going. Instead, it's a pile of misused parts.
