Peter Pan & Wendy

Peter Pan & Wendy conflicts with itself. It deepens themes by highlighting Pan's flaws and Hook's humanity, yet the film hesitates with this moral complexity. Beholden to Disney formulas, Pan & Wendy spends most of its time on predictable plot points, blunt dialogue, corny humor, silly threats, and excessive side characters. Consequently, it's neither wholly derivative nor particularly fresh. Those flashes of insight are welcome, yet they almost clash with its mundane structure. Meanwhile, the acting has decent charisma but its vulnerability is mild, following the sanitized tone. Overall, Pan & Wendy dilutes kernels of substance with an overstuffed checklist of cliches.

Technically, Pan & Wendy is similarly undecided. Its imagery uses motion, color, long takes, lighting, focus, and a dolly zoom for spotty meaning. The sound adds genre elements, echoes, symbolism, a motif, muffling, and stings. Its production design establishes an exotic fantasyland, yet it's safe and shallow. The cast offers representation but thin recognizability. Its music has recurring opera, new renditions, and fun shanties, yet it's often generic. The effects are involved but overly digital. Its editing utilizes iris wipes, smash inserts, dissolves, and intercuts, yet the tempo rushes drama. Ultimately, Peter Pan & Wendy buries artistic ideas in a forgettable missed opportunity.
