Snowpiercer

Writer's picture: Gus KellerGus Keller

Snowpiercer is entertainment with substance. While some might find its high concept silly or obvious, that's intentionally harnessed. Combining satire plus tragedy, the script explores themes like classism, climate change, power, temptation, and destiny. It concludes that liberation comes from dismantling oppressive systems entirely. Meanwhile, the plot is linear yet continuously thickening. It has a defined cast of characters whose motivations meet moral conflicts. There's efficient exposition, dark humor, twists, setup/payoff, symbolism, and consequences. The acting is ranged but cohesive, going from comedy to vulnerability. Thus, Snowpiercer is uniquely layered yet intuitive.

Snowpiercer purposefully blends tones as well as styles. Its cinematography utilizes stark lighting, directional framing, and precise movement. Within tight pacing, the editing provides clear action plus flourishes of flair. Risers, combat, subjective distortions, smash cuts, and key quiet enhance its soundscape. The music is fairly eclectic while also remaining restrained. Building a concise dystopian world, its production design uses symbolic colors, steampunk genre elements, claustrophobic spacing, and exaggeration. The cast features fitting fame as well as thematic diversity. Its effects supplement CGI with practical touches. Overall, Snowpiercer is a complete experience.
