Space Cop is knowingly bad but bad all the same. The script offers nothing to emotionally invest in, placing the entertainment value solely on its rudimentary humor. It has obvious exposition, no subtext, a rambling plot, monotonous characters, and only ironic attempts at setup/payoff. Much of the comedy is intentionally silly puns, inside jokes, or anti-humor, none of which is particularly clever or ahead of the audience. There's no vulnerability, growth, structure, surprises, or insight. The acting feels very forced, transparent, one-note, annoying, and novice. Consequently, Space Cop is remarkably lacking in storytelling fundamentals, coming across as empty and amateur.
Technically, Space Cop is cheap, aimless, and farcical. The production design attempts sci-fi beyond its reach, exposing the DIY budget. Its overtly unconvincing effects include CGI, compositing, miniatures, makeup, prosthetics, and wires. The imagery is flat and static, with clumsy lighting, exposure, and composition. Its editing has minor craft, no momentum, meandering filler, and uneven pacing. The audio uses genre elements, rough ADR, poor clarity, and goofy sound effects. Its music provides generic synths and comedic timing. The cast is only recognizable to Red Letter Media fans. Ultimately, Space Cop is similar in quality to internet videos and student films.
