Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is careless. Its plot is generic, convoluted, illogical, and impersonal. It has inept villains, flat protagonists, contrived dialogue, constant coincidences, crude humor, blunt exposition, insincere drama, and predictability. There's a forced arc that's so underdeveloped, it basically doesn't exist. Nothing is earned, logistics are nonsense, and side characters are pointless. The script overemphasizes April, sidelining the turtles. Its acting is shallow, unenthused, and stiff. Overall, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a jumble of repetitive cliches, shoehorned emotions, groaner jokes, and a boring narrative. There's absolutely nothing to connect with here.

Technically, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is superficial at best and abrasive at worst. Its imagery has unmotivated lighting, unclear movement, cluttered framing, and odd coloring. The sound is style over substance and often noisy. Its effects are heavily reliant on cartoonish CGI. The cast is fairly famous, but the turtles are clearly not teens. Its editing is rushed and overcut. The production design adds blatant product placement, unsightly heroes, weak continuity, and sterile environments. Its try-hard music imitates Marvel and Transformers. Ultimately, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles compensates for its lack of heart or creativity with bloated set pieces and empty flash.
