The Amateur

The Amateur is forgettable. Mostly built around routine cliches, the script squanders its catchy premise. Though not convoluted, the plot remains overstuffed. In turn, its underdeveloped drama yields mediocre characters plus distant investment. This is exacerbated by a cold protagonist, who (despite Malek's internal intensity) feels one-note as well as uncharismatic. There's blunt dialogue, heavy exposition, contrivances, and dead-end threads. It gestures towards themes like the morality of revenge, yet avoids taking an actual stance. Furthermore, the third act is anticlimactic. Narratively, The Amateur may not have blatant flaws, but it also doesn't have any clear strengths.

Technically, The Amateur's sleek tone struggles to strike a personality. The imagery can get drab, yet that's mitigated by claustrophobic composition. Despite competent combat, inserts, and cross cuts, its editing fails to mount sufficient momentum. Appropriate action along with subjective distortions boost its soundscape. Toeing the line between unique and generic, its music generates a measured atmosphere. The production design establishes expected (although unremarkable) globetrotting espionage settings. Its cast has plenty of fit plus oddly placed fame outside of Malek. The effects combine average CGI with standard stunts. Ultimately, The Amateur doesn't stand out much.
