The Electric State

The Electric State is a collection of blockbuster pitfalls. Its formulaic tropes manage vague competence but also ring insincere. Instead of naturally developing characters, it bluntly states their motivations. The dialogue is heavily exposition. Its high concepts invite themes like prejudice, technological dependency, and consciousness, yet the overbearing plot cramps those ideas to their obvious surfaces. There's misplaced humor, predictability, contrivances, unnecessary side characters, and lacking tension. The acting shows flashes of vulnerability, but often feels one-note, farcical, or even wooden. Altogether, The Electric State prioritizes a generic plot over earned emotions.

Technically, The Electric State feels sanitized in its tone as well as its style. Despite movement, lighting, and focus, the imagery has cluttered framing plus dull colors. Its editing constructs rushed drama scenes, excessive montages, and repetitive action. Genre elements plus some subjective distortions embody the soundscape. Its music combines appropriate scoring with acceptable needle drops. The production design conveys slightly retrofuturistic world-building, but also drabness and product placements. Its cast has fitting fame as well as squandered talent. Though unvaried, the CGI effects are convincing. Overall, The Electric State turns potential into something quite average.
