The Fall Guy

The Fall Guy is a jumble of predictable tropes, attempting many genres that often clash. The characters are surprisingly flat and stagnant, only coming alive in spurts through the sheer likability of the performers. Its protagonist is set up with internal conflicts that are quickly abandoned, leaving the script with a generic plot, empty drama, and no themes. Moreover, one superficial motivation guiding every character choice makes for very few surprises. It has some meta-awareness, sporadically successful humor, and fair actor chemistry, but that all rings hollow without adequately earned heart. Ultimately, The Fall Guy lacks sufficient emotions and originality.

Technically, The Fall Guy assembles common set pieces, minimal tension, and muddled tones. While its imagery uses oners and framing, there's little meaning involved. The editing offers montages, split screens, intercuts, and action, yet the structure is clunky. Its sound adds voiceovers, emphasis, distortions, and smash cuts. The music relies on recurring needle drops that mostly feel arbitrary. Its production design establishes the moviemaking industry, complete with product placements. The cast has fame, fit, and mediocre depth. Its effects supply stunts and pyrotechnics (yet not as much as expected). Overall, The Fall Guy is less than the sum of its parts.
