The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lacks a story. Essential concepts like plot and drama are only gestured towards, barely disguising the film as anything more than a commercial. Most of its empty script prioritizes fan service, inane humor, or mindless action. The actual narrative is an afterthought, yielding no emotional investment. Characters are paper-thin vessels without consistent motivations or personalities. There are hollow stakes, unearned beats, abundant cliches, and blunt exposition dumps. Never legitimizing the adventure, every moment feels manufactured. Meanwhile, its voice acting consists of paycheck non-efforts. Thus, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a waste.

Technically, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a corporate product. Its direction commits to a glossy, sterile tone. Though full of stimulus, the cinematography seems shallow and busy. Despite a reasonable runtime, its haphazard editing has no sense of structure or momentum. Genre elements, along with some recognizable iconography, are present in the soundscape. Surprisingly generic, its music inexplicably avoids the source material's famous tunes. Its production design leans into cluttered merchandising. The cast has arbitrary and underutilized stars. Acceptable textures are offered through its CGI animation. Overall, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie cheapens the medium.
